Information About Vaisakhi
Vaisakhi, also spelled Baisakhi, is one of the most important dates in the Sikh calendar. It is the Sikh New Year festival and is celebrated on April 13 or 14. It also commemorates 1699, the year Sikhism was born as a collective faith.
This day has a special religious, socio-cultural and economic significance for the Sikhs as it is the anniversary of the establishment of the institution of the Khalsa Brotherhood.
Vaisakhi is a long established harvest festival in the Punjab. It had been celebrated long before it gained an added dimension for Sikhs. It is one of the most important Sikh festivals. On the new year's day, families visit the temple to pray, wear new clothes and focus on the reading of Sikh scripture to thank God for His blessings and love. At this time people think about their commitment to the Sikh way of life, to make resolutions to develop themselves as good, loyal and honest beings while they meet family members and friends and celebrate.
